BEGINNING OF SCENE RESSELPARK THOUSANDS OF FORMER INETSEC PARTICIPANTS HAVE GATHERED You should read the rest of the text with Frank Sinatra's song, My Way, in mind. Keep repeating the phrases: Tra la la... and now, the end is near, and so I face, the final curtain... My friend, I'll say it clear... tra la la... I'll state my case, of which I'm certain.. ta taaaa... Excellent. Now that we have created a cheesy, sad environment, I can continue. (AUDIENCE: LAUGHTER NOW) I just wanted to write a couple of sentences for me and Chris as all good things come to an end. Life goes on, people get replaced and the show continues. Well, yes, maybe not always... but at least in this case, it does continue. (AUDIENCE: CHEER NOW) This will be the last InetSec 2 for me an Christopher. We have been teaching it for many years, but things have gotten more complicated after our move from Austria a year ago. We've managed to keep it up and running for a year... however, we have less and less time, and cannot invest the effort that we would like to invest. It is not fair to the students, so it is time to pass on the torch. (AUDIENCE: SAY: AAAAAAAAH) As of next semester, Clemens, Christian, and Paolo will be running the show. They are lab members in Vienna. They are younger. They are better looking. They are more charismatic. They are smarter ;-) I am sure they will do a terrific and a better job than us. (AUDIENCE: CLAP) I would kindly ask you to remember and also pass on the knowledge that these guys are volunteers. They did not want the course to end, and were willing to take over the work. As you can imagine, it is a lot of work. Besides the publication stress and other teaching duties, they have to invest quite a bit of time to run things. As a father once said to his child: "Son, I brought you to this world and I can take you out!". Keep that in mind. (AUDIENCE: SMALL LAUGHTER) Looking back... InetSec dates back to the early days of the 21st century. At that time, there was one course. It was like a combination of InetSec 1 and 2, but less advanced. In 2001 Thomas and Chris started doing it. Thomas gave the course between 2002 and 2003. It was a great course. In 2004, Chris and I took over and decided to create two courses, one of them being an advanced course. Our aim was to create a course that would have interested us as students. We had taken security courses, but they were mainly on crypto or... in some cases ... useless security. We thought it would be cool to have a systems security course that would teach the low-level stuff and that would be inline with our scientific security work. The course was a lot of work, but the students liked it so we continued. At the beginning of the course, we were young and poor ;-) We had to salvage 3 old computers from the distributed systems lab. gangsta, masta and bandit were running on these machines. Everyday, we were afraid that one of the servers was going to burn out. Fortunately, it did not happen. Compare that to 2009. We now have a modern infrastructure with virtual machines and very powerful servers. We have more hardware than we need. Thanks to hard work, projects and sponsors. We've come a long way. (AUDIENCE: SMILE) Interestingly, InetSec 2 has also had impact in real-life. After we showed live demos of breaking smart-card based digital signature systems (oh, you thought it was safe?) during a lecture, we were approached by officials who wanted to know more. As a result, some products were improved and made more secure (of course, if you would invest enough time, you can still break them -- but hey, we got bored after a while.). (AUDIENCE: CHEER NOW) So, future TU Vienna InetSec participant. Thou art in good hands. Our friends will take good care of you in the future. So long, and thanks for all the fun, trust, support, insults, complaints, unintended fork bombs, excitement, bad words, WTFs, praise, and encouragement. Take care, and talk to us if you see us at a conference. EXIT EK EXIT CHRIS ENTER WONGDONG, CK, PMILANI (AUDIENCE: CLAP) SILENCE CROWD DISPERSES LIGHT RAIN END OF SCENE --EK & CHRIS
